Electromagnetic Radiation from Relativistic Electron Beams

These notes represent an introduction to the physics of synchrotron radiation. Such radiation is produced by relativistic electron beams being de‡ected by magnetic ...eld. Speci...cally, relativistic electron beams are injected into circular accelerators, called storage rings, where they circulate for many hours while continuously producing synchrotron radiation for the bene...t of research in pure and applied science. In another note ”Introduction to Storage Ring Physics” the basic workings of storage rings are discussed. Here we concentrate on the more detailed discussion of the characteristics of synchrotron radiation. Furthermore, we discuss the characteristics of insertion-device radiation like that from undulator and wiggler magnets. The format of this note is too short to cover much detail and therefore many results are given without derivation. Interested readers are pointed to the books ”Particle Accelerator Physics”, Vol. I and II by H. Wiedemann, Springer Verlag for more detailed discussions.
